Top 5 Tips to Keep Your Dog Cool During Hot Weather
Help your four-legged friend stay safe, happy, and comfortable this summer.
When the sun comes out, it's tempting to spend every minute outdoors with your dog. But while we can cool ourselves down with a cold drink or a fan, our dogs rely on us to help them stay comfortable.
Unlike humans, dogs don't sweat through their skin. They mainly cool themselves by panting, which means they can quickly become overheated in warm weather. Heatstroke can happen faster than many owners realise, so taking a few simple precautions can make all the difference.
Here are our Top 5 Tips for keeping your dog cool during the warmer months.
🐾 1. Walk Early or Late in the Day
Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day (usually between 11am and 3pm).
Instead, head out:
- 🌅 Early in the morning
- 🌇 Later in the evening
Not only is the temperature lower, but pavements will also be cooler, helping protect your dog's sensitive paw pads.
Top Tip: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.
💧 2. Keep Fresh Water Available at All Times
Hydration is essential.
Make sure your dog always has access to clean, fresh drinking water, both at home and when you're out and about.
Don't forget to:
- Take a portable water bottle and travel bowl on walks.
- Refill bowls regularly.
- Add a few ice cubes on particularly warm days (if your dog enjoys them).
❄️ 3. Create Cool Places to Relax
Dogs need somewhere to escape the heat.
Help them cool down by:
- Keeping curtains closed during the hottest hours.
- Using cooling mats.
- Allowing access to tiled floors.
- Placing a fan nearby (not directly blowing on them continuously).
Frozen treats or dog-safe ice lollies can also provide a refreshing reward.
🚗 4. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car
Even with the windows slightly open, the temperature inside a parked car can become dangerously high within minutes.
Heatstroke can be fatal.
If you're running errands, it's always safest to leave your dog at home where they'll stay cool and comfortable.
🩺 5. Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Recognising the warning signs early could save your dog's life.
Look out for:
- Excessive panting
- Drooling more than usual
- Bright red gums
- Lethargy or weakness
- Vomiting
- Collapse or difficulty standing
If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke:
- Move them somewhere cool.
- Offer small amounts of water.
- Cool them gradually using cool (not ice-cold) water.
- Contact your vet immediately.
